Matthew Peters

The fight for our future.

Hi! My name is Matthew Peters, and I'm a junior at Middleton High School. Ever since I was little, I've had an interest in the environment. I always loved going to the zoo, hiking, and just appreciating the outdoors in general. I used to love seeing our planet as this beautiful, thriving place. But lately, I've noticed the health of our environment in America decline — and fast.

It only got worse during the Trump administration. On his first day back in office, he signed Executive Order 14162, pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Agreement and walking away from international climate leadership. He's pushed fossil fuels hard, tried to revive the coal industry, and ignored the expansion of cleaner, cheaper energy. He's even abolished the Environmental Justice office, firing key personnel and ending programs to protect vulnerable communities.

But my tipping point was on March 1st. That's when he signed an executive order to open up over 50% of the national forests in the U.S. —a total of about 113 million acres — to logging. That move will destroy ecosystems, hurt wildlife, and accelerate climate change. It puts short-term profit ahead of the future of our planet.

That's when I realized I couldn't stay quiet any longer. I needed to take action — safeguard my neighborhood, prevent Middleton from becoming a casualty of the same type of environmental devastation that's happening all across the country. That's why I started this campaign: to make our streets more beautiful, plant trees, and establish a community that's strong enough to fight back.

Our mission is simple — to keep Middleton strong, clean, and green. Let's demonstrate that we care.

For a Better Tomorrow

My name is Ashly Mireles Albarran, and I’m a junior at Middleton High School.

Ever since I was little, I’ve loved nature and the outdoors. I used to spend hours outside riding my bike until the sun went down, visiting the zoo, and looking forward to my family’s annual camping trip — still my favorite time of year. Today, I still love hiking, camping, and spending time in nature, and that lifelong connection is what drives my desire to protect and preserve our planet.

Now more than ever, our world needs protecting — and I’m ready to do everything in my power to help.

Since beginning his second term in 2025, President Donald Trump has enacted a series of policies that have severely damaged environmental protection efforts. On his first day back in office, he withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement and ended our international climate finance commitments. His administration expanded offshore oil and gas drilling — even in the Arctic — and rolled back clean energy initiatives by halting major wind projects and slashing funding for renewable energy programs.

Then in March, President Trump signed Executive Order 14225, titled “Immediate Expansion of American Timber Production,” opening approximately 113 million acres of public land to logging. Experts warn that logging just 10 million acres of mature forest could release between 1.2 to 1.5 gigatons of CO₂ — the equivalent of three years of emissions from the entire U.S. aviation industry. On top of that, studies show that logged areas face 20–35% higher wildfire intensity due to leftover debris and reduced canopy cover. This order could devastate ecosystems and make it even harder to address the climate crisis.

Watching these changes unfold has made one thing clear to me: I need to act now.

I may not be able to reverse harmful federal policies overnight, but I can start by making a difference in my own community. That’s why, when my friend Matthew Peters told me he was launching a campaign to keep our town strong, clean, and green, I immediately joined him.

Together, we are starting the Middleton Green Project.

Our goal is simple: to create a cleaner, greener future right here in Middleton. We’re working to plant trees, clean up our streets, raise awareness, fundraise, and bring our community together to show that we care — and that we’re paying attention.

The world is changing fast. But so are we.

Our mission is to keep Middleton strong, clean, and green.

Let’s show the world that we care — and that we’re ready to fight for our future.
